Synopsis : Orada (There) tells the 24-hour story of a turkish family. After his mother’s suicide, Mazhar, who was exiled to France during 12 years, comes back in Istanbul. The reunion with his elder sister Neslihan is painful. In the afternoon, after the funeral, they decide to find and tell their father the death of his wife. Since their separation, Erol lives confined on an island. He is an Armenian of Istanbul who had to flee to Marseille after the 1955 pogrom against the non-Muslim communities, before returning in Turkey to redo his life. He has completely occulted his past. During the evening, the family’s whole past will resurface.

Synopsis

Ten-year-old Thembi and her eight-year-old brother, Khwezi, are left alone in their rural homestead when their mother dies. All they have to remember Mama is a grass mat she wove, which she aimed to enter in a craft competition. Her dream, inspired by a visit to their village by a white priest from the city, was for the mat to win a prize that could support her children. So Thembi decides to take the mat to the competition herself, and Khwezi reluctantly goes with her. When the children arrive in the city they are spotted by a street-wise 12-year-old, Chili-Bite, and his gang. He offers them a place to sleep on the street and tells her of a friend who knows the priest – who turns out to be a sleazy pimp who aims to sell this rural girl’s virginity as a cure for AIDS. It is Thembi’s relationship with Khwezi that sustains her quest to fulfill her mother’s dream. When this bond between the siblings is broken, she succumbs to the grief that has been welling up inside her since her mother’s death. In her time alone she discovers her own dream and her own talent, then is able to reconcile with her new friends from the street, and with her little brother.

Girish Kasaravalli : Many of my films deal with the individual and the problems created by their milieu. While I was writing this film, I had actually decided to make a film where an individual called Gulabi was important, but equally the whole milieu, the whole fisherman community, was as dominant as Gulabi. So, while preparing, I decided I would focus on the whole lot of issues that haunted the contemporary society, but still make a story that would be dramatically quite intense and that would not fall apart.

Sivan, at around the age of 20, is a native of the Southeastern region of Anatolia. One day, Sivan meets with the girl he loves, Berfin in a field around the village. The same day the field is burnt by saboteurs and the whole harvest of the village is wasted. The investigation initiated after the incident, changes Sivan's life drastically. Taken in for an interrogation, Sivan is caught between the police and the insurgents. Thinking his son's life is in peril, Saho assures Sivan's fleeing out of the country. Taken to Germany by the help of a illegal network, Sivan is located in a refugee camp. However, in this new land whose language is alien to him, Sivan will go through an ordeal which will add a new dimension to the residue of his experiences in Turkey.
